LIPOPROTEIN A

Lp(a) is similar to LDL cholesterol but is largely determined by genetics rather than diet, and is not significantly lowered by most cholesterol medications. Elevated Lp(a) is associated with increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and aortic valve disease, independent of LDL.

This test is used to refine cardiovascular risk assessment in patients with personal or family history of early heart disease, evaluate patients with disease unexplained by standard risk factors, and screen relatives of patients with known elevated Lp(a). Levels are stable throughout life, so typically tested only once. Sample type is serum.
