Levetiracetam is a commonly prescribed anticonvulsant used to treat partial-onset, myoclonic, and generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Unlike many older anti-seizure medications, it does not require routine therapeutic drug monitoring in most patients.
However, this test can be valuable when seizures persist despite treatment, when adherence is uncertain, in patients with kidney impairment (since the drug is renally cleared), in pregnant patients where blood levels can change significantly, and when symptoms of toxicity such as somnolence, dizziness, or behavioral changes appear. Trough levels are typically the most useful timing. Sample type is serum.
