LAMOTRIGINE (LAMICTAL), SERUM

Lamotrigine is used for several types of seizures and as a mood stabilizer in bipolar disorder. While it does not require monitoring as routinely as some older anticonvulsants, blood level testing can be valuable in certain clinical situations.

This test is ordered to assess adequacy of therapy in patients with continued seizures or mood symptoms, evaluate suspected toxicity (which may present as dizziness, double vision, ataxia, or rash), verify adherence, and guide dosing during pregnancy, when lamotrigine levels can drop significantly. Trough levels — drawn just before the next dose — are generally most informative. Sample type is serum.
