LACTATE DEHYDROGENASE (LD)

LD is released from cells when they are damaged, with elevations occurring in conditions affecting the heart, liver, muscles, blood, kidneys, and lungs. Because LD is so widespread, it is most useful in combination with the clinical context and other tests.

This test is used to evaluate hemolytic anemia, monitor certain cancers (including germ cell tumors and lymphomas), assess tissue damage in acute illness, and follow conditions like pulmonary embolism, liver disease, and cardiac injury. LD isoenzyme testing can help identify the source of elevation when needed. Sample type is serum.
