This combined test measures serum iron, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), and calculates transferrin saturation. These values together reveal much more than iron alone: in iron deficiency, iron is low and TIBC is high; in iron overload, iron is high and TIBC is normal or low; in anemia of chronic disease, both are typically low.
This panel is used to evaluate suspected iron deficiency anemia, investigate elevated ferritin, screen for hereditary hemochromatosis, and monitor iron therapy. Results are best interpreted alongside ferritin. Sample type is serum.
