This test measures serum iron, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), and calculates transferrin saturation — the percentage of iron-binding sites that are actually filled with iron. These values together reveal much more than iron alone: in iron deficiency, iron is low and TIBC is high, while in iron overload, iron is high and TIBC is low or normal.

This panel is used to evaluate suspected iron deficiency anemia, investigate elevated ferritin, screen for hereditary hemochromatosis, and monitor iron therapy. Results are best interpreted alongside ferritin, which reflects iron storage. Morning samples are preferred because iron levels naturally fluctuate throughout the day. Sample type is serum.
