Iodine is required for the production of thyroid hormones. Deficiency can cause hypothyroidism and goiter, while excess can also disrupt thyroid function. Iodine status is determined more by intake patterns than by serum measurement, but blood testing has selected uses in specific clinical situations.
This test is used in evaluation of unusual thyroid disorders, possible iodine excess (such as after iodinated contrast or amiodarone), and certain occupational exposures. Urine iodine is generally preferred for assessing recent intake. Sample type is serum or plasma.
