Insulin allows cells throughout the body to take up glucose for energy. Abnormal insulin levels can occur in insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, polycystic ovary syndrome, metabolic syndrome, and rare insulin-secreting tumors (insulinomas).
This test is used to assess insulin resistance — often together with fasting glucose — investigate unexplained hypoglycemia, evaluate metabolic syndrome and PCOS, and help diagnose pancreatic insulin-producing tumors. Interpretation depends heavily on whether the patient is fasting and on simultaneous glucose levels. Sample type is serum.
