IgG is the predominant antibody type and provides long-lasting protection after infection or vaccination. Low IgG can indicate primary immunodeficiency (such as common variable immunodeficiency), protein loss, or certain malignancies. Elevated IgG can occur in chronic infections, autoimmune diseases, and certain blood disorders like multiple myeloma.
This test is used to evaluate recurrent infections, work up suspected immunodeficiency, monitor patients on immunoglobulin replacement therapy, and assess gammopathies. It is often tested alongside IgA and IgM for a complete immunoglobulin profile. Sample type is serum.
