IgE plays a central role in allergic reactions, including asthma, allergic rhinitis, food allergies, and anaphylaxis. Total IgE is typically elevated in patients with significant allergic disease, parasitic infections, and certain rare immune disorders such as hyper-IgE syndrome.
This test is used to evaluate patients with significant allergic symptoms, suspected allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (where IgE is markedly elevated), parasite infections in patients with relevant exposure, and immunodeficiency workup. Specific IgE testing (for individual allergens) is more useful for diagnosing particular allergies. Sample type is serum.
