IgD is the least abundant immunoglobulin class and its function is not fully understood. Significantly elevated IgD can occur in IgD multiple myeloma (a rare subtype), hyper-IgD syndrome (a rare inherited periodic fever disorder), and certain chronic inflammatory conditions.
This test is used in selected clinical situations including suspected IgD multiple myeloma when monoclonal gammopathy is found without obvious IgG, IgA, or IgM involvement, and evaluation of periodic fever syndromes. Sample type is serum.
