IMMUNOGLOBULIN A

IgA is the most abundant antibody at mucosal surfaces and is also present in blood. Low IgA can result from selective IgA deficiency (the most common immunodeficiency, often asymptomatic but with implications for transfusion and celiac testing), common variable immunodeficiency, and other conditions. Elevated IgA can occur in chronic infections, autoimmune disease, and certain blood disorders.

This test is used to evaluate recurrent infections, work up suspected immunodeficiency, screen before celiac disease antibody testing (which is IgA-based and may give false negatives in IgA deficiency), and investigate certain autoimmune and hematologic conditions. Sample type is serum.
