Random urine immunofixation can detect the presence of monoclonal light chains (Bence Jones proteins) and characterize their type (kappa or lambda). While quantification requires a 24-hour collection, qualitative detection in a random sample can support initial diagnosis and guide further evaluation.
This test is used in initial evaluation for monoclonal gammopathies, screening when a full 24-hour collection isn't practical, and follow-up assessment. Positive findings typically prompt 24-hour collection for quantification. Sample type is a random urine specimen.
