Normally, only mature white blood cells circulate in the bloodstream, with their immature precursors confined to the bone marrow. The appearance of immature cells in peripheral blood — including myelocytes, metamyelocytes, blasts, or nucleated red blood cells — can indicate significant marrow stress, infection, leukemia, or other serious conditions.
This finding is reported as part of CBC differential analysis when immature cells are seen on blood smear review. It typically prompts further evaluation, which may include additional blood testing, bone marrow examination, or specialist referral. Sample type is whole blood in an EDTA tube.
