IGF-1

IGF-1 is produced primarily by the liver in response to growth hormone and mediates many of GH's effects on tissues. Unlike growth hormone itself, IGF-1 levels are stable throughout the day, making them a more practical measure of overall GH activity. Levels normally vary with age and sex.

This test is used to screen for and monitor growth hormone deficiency in children, evaluate adult GH deficiency, screen for and monitor acromegaly, and assess pituitary disorders. It is often part of pituitary evaluation panels. Sample type is serum.
