Antibodies against islet antigen 2 (IA-2) appear in about 60-70% of patients with new-onset type 1 diabetes. Their presence, especially alongside other diabetes autoantibodies like GAD-65, strongly supports the autoimmune nature of the disease and identifies family members at high risk of developing diabetes.
This test is used to distinguish type 1 from type 2 diabetes, evaluate adult-onset diabetes for possible LADA, and screen family members of patients with type 1 diabetes for future disease risk. Sample type is serum.
