IgG antibodies to HSV develop after infection and persist for life, indicating past exposure regardless of whether symptoms occurred. Testing for both HSV-1 and HSV-2 antibodies provides information about previous infection with either type and can help explain recurrent oral or genital symptoms.
This test is used to evaluate suspected past herpes infection when active lesions aren't present, assess sexual partners, screen during pregnancy in selected cases, and investigate unexplained recurrent symptoms. Type-specific testing is preferred for distinguishing between HSV-1 and HSV-2. Sample type is serum.
