HSV-2 is the most common cause of recurrent genital herpes and is associated with frequent outbreaks and ongoing transmission risk. HSV-2 IgG antibodies persist for life after infection and indicate past exposure regardless of whether symptoms have occurred.
This test is used to evaluate patients with suspected past genital herpes when active lesions are absent, screen sexual partners, evaluate pregnant women with possible past exposure, and investigate unexplained recurrent genital symptoms. Sample type is serum.
