This test detects antibodies the body produces in response to hepatitis C infection. A positive result indicates exposure but does not distinguish between current active infection and prior resolved infection — that requires hepatitis C RNA (viral load) testing. With curative antiviral therapy now available, identifying patients with HCV infection is critical.
This test is recommended at least once for all adults, more frequently for those at higher risk, and during pregnancy. Sample type is serum.
