Hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) is produced during active viral replication. As infection progresses, many patients develop anti-HBe antibodies — a transition known as seroconversion — which generally indicates lower viral replication and improved long-term outlook. However, some patients with anti-HBe still have ongoing replication due to viral mutations.
This test is used to stage chronic hepatitis B infection, assess infectivity, monitor response to antiviral therapy, and guide treatment decisions. It is typically interpreted alongside HBeAg, HBV DNA viral load, ALT, and other markers. Sample type is serum.
