IgM antibodies to hepatitis A appear early in the course of infection — usually before symptoms peak — and remain detectable for several months. Their presence indicates current or recent hepatitis A infection. Hepatitis A is usually a self-limited illness, but it can be severe in older adults and those with underlying liver disease.
This test is used to diagnose acute hepatitis in patients presenting with jaundice, fatigue, nausea, and abnormal liver enzymes, particularly after potential exposure (such as during outbreaks, after travel to endemic areas, or in food-related events). Sample type is serum.
