IgM antibodies to hepatitis A appear early in the course of infection — often before symptoms peak — and remain detectable for several months. Their presence indicates current or recent hepatitis A infection. Hepatitis A is usually self-limited but can be severe in older adults and patients with underlying liver disease.
This test is used to diagnose acute hepatitis in patients with jaundice, fatigue, nausea, and abnormal liver enzymes, particularly after potential exposure during outbreaks, travel to endemic areas, or food-related events. Sample type is serum.
