HEMOGLOBIN

Hemoglobin is the iron-containing protein in red blood cells responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body. Low hemoglobin (anemia) can cause fatigue, weakness, shortness of breath, and pale skin, while abnormally high levels may indicate polycythemia, dehydration, lung disease, or living at high altitude.

This test is ordered to evaluate symptoms suggesting anemia, monitor known blood disorders, assess blood loss after surgery or trauma, screen during pregnancy, and follow patients receiving chemotherapy or treatment for chronic kidney disease. Hemoglobin is also a key component of the Complete Blood Count (CBC). Sample type is whole blood in an EDTA tube.
