HEMATOCRIT

Hematocrit reflects the proportion of blood volume made up of red blood cells. Low hematocrit indicates anemia, while high hematocrit may result from dehydration, polycythemia, chronic lung or heart disease, or living at high altitude. Hematocrit is closely related to hemoglobin, and the two are typically interpreted together.

This test is included in the CBC and is also ordered to evaluate fatigue, shortness of breath, and other anemia symptoms; monitor blood loss; assess hydration status; and follow patients with known blood disorders or on therapies affecting red blood cell production. Sample type is whole blood in an EDTA tube.
