Heavy metals can cause significant toxicity affecting the nervous system, kidneys, blood, and other organs. Lead is particularly concerning in children, where even modest exposures can affect development. Mercury exposure most commonly comes from contaminated fish, while arsenic exposure may come from water or certain workplaces.
This test is used in patients with suspected heavy metal exposure based on occupation, environment, or symptoms; in screening high-risk children for lead; and in evaluating unexplained neurological, hematologic, or renal symptoms. Sample type is whole blood in special metal-free tubes.
