This test detects antibodies the body produces in response to hepatitis C infection. A positive result indicates exposure to the virus, but does not distinguish between active infection and prior resolved infection — that requires follow-up testing with hepatitis C RNA (viral load).
This test is recommended at least once for all adults, more frequently for those at higher risk (people who have used injection drugs, received blood products before 1992, or have HIV), and during pregnancy. With effective antiviral therapy now available to cure hepatitis C in most cases, screening is critical for identifying patients who can benefit from treatment. Sample type is serum.
