Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is the hormone produced by the developing placenta after embryo implantation. The qualitative version of this test simply detects whether hCG is present above a clinically meaningful threshold, providing a clear positive or negative result rather than a specific number.
This test is primarily used as a definitive pregnancy confirmation, often after a positive home urine test, before procedures or imaging that could affect a fetus, and before initiating medications that are unsafe in pregnancy. When monitoring of hCG levels over time is needed — such as for early pregnancy viability — the quantitative version is ordered instead. Sample type is serum.
