Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is a protein on the surface of the virus and is the earliest detectable marker of infection. Persistence of HBsAg for more than six months defines chronic infection, while clearance generally indicates resolution.
This test is recommended for screening pregnant women, blood and organ donors, healthcare workers with exposure risk, immigrants from endemic areas, household and sexual contacts of HBV-infected individuals, and patients before immunosuppressive therapy. Positive results trigger additional hepatitis B testing to determine infection status. Sample type is serum.
