GROWTH HORMONE, SERUM

Growth hormone is produced by the pituitary gland and drives growth in children and metabolism in adults. GH secretion is pulsatile and varies throughout the day, so single random measurements often have limited value. Dynamic testing — such as stimulation or suppression tests — is typically used to definitively diagnose disorders.

This test is used to evaluate suspected growth hormone deficiency in children with poor growth, investigate adult GH deficiency, work up suspected acromegaly or gigantism, and monitor patients with pituitary disorders. It is typically interpreted alongside IGF-1, which provides a more stable measure of GH activity. Sample type is serum.
