This combined test uses an immunoassay (EIA) specifically for Giardia — a common protozoan parasite — plus a microscopic ova and parasite (O&P) exam for other intestinal parasites including Cryptosporidium, Entamoeba histolytica, and various worm eggs. The EIA is more sensitive for Giardia than microscopy alone.
This test is used to evaluate patients with diarrhea, particularly after international travel, contaminated water exposure, child care attendance, or in patients with risk factors for parasitic infection. Multiple specimens collected over several days improve sensitivity for parasitic detection. Sample type is stool in appropriate preservatives.
