GGT is concentrated in liver and bile duct cells and rises in response to a wide range of liver and biliary insults. It is one of the most sensitive enzymes for cholestasis (impaired bile flow) and is often elevated in alcohol-related liver disease, even before other liver tests change.
This test is used to clarify the source of elevated alkaline phosphatase (a high GGT alongside it suggests liver origin), evaluate suspected alcohol-related liver injury, investigate cholestatic liver disease, and monitor patients on hepatotoxic medications. It is generally interpreted alongside other liver function tests. Sample type is serum.
