Genital cultures identify pathogens specific to the male or female genital tract, including Neisseria gonorrhoeae and certain other bacteria. While many sexually transmitted infections are now diagnosed by molecular (NAAT) testing, culture remains valuable for susceptibility testing and for organisms not covered by molecular panels.
This test is used to evaluate symptoms such as genital discharge or pelvic pain, work up suspected pelvic inflammatory disease, evaluate infections that are resistant or persistent, and obtain susceptibility testing in gonorrhea where resistance is a concern. Sample type is a cervical, urethral, or vaginal swab depending on the patient.
