GASTRIN

Gastrin is produced by specialized cells in the stomach and pancreas. Markedly elevated gastrin levels — particularly with high stomach acid output — point to Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, a rare condition involving gastrin-secreting tumors (gastrinomas) usually located in the pancreas or duodenum. Elevated gastrin can also occur in pernicious anemia, atrophic gastritis, and with use of acid-suppressing medications.

This test is used to evaluate severe or recurrent peptic ulcer disease, diarrhea with suspected hypersecretion of stomach acid, screen for MEN1 syndrome, and investigate persistent or unusual GI symptoms. Patients should be off proton pump inhibitors for at least one week before testing if possible. Sample type is serum, fasting.
