Antibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 (GAD-65) attack pancreatic beta cells in type 1 diabetes and are among the most common diabetes autoantibodies. They also appear in stiff-person syndrome and certain other neurological autoimmune diseases.
This test is used to distinguish type 1 from type 2 diabetes (particularly in adult-onset diabetes that may be LADA), evaluate suspected stiff-person syndrome, and assess autoimmune cerebellar ataxia. Sample type is serum.
