Antibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase 65 (GAD-65) attack pancreatic beta cells and are one of the most common autoantibodies in type 1 diabetes. They are also seen in stiff-person syndrome and certain other neurological autoimmune diseases.
This test is used to distinguish type 1 from type 2 diabetes, particularly in adults where presentation may be ambiguous (including LADA), and to evaluate suspected stiff-person syndrome or autoimmune cerebellar ataxia. Sample type is serum.
