Fungal cultures use specialized media and longer incubation times to grow fungi, which generally grow more slowly than bacteria. Common fungal pathogens include dermatophytes (causing skin and nail infections), Candida, Aspergillus, and various endemic fungi such as Histoplasma or Coccidioides.
This test is ordered to evaluate suspected fungal infections of skin, nails, mucous membranes, blood, lungs, or deep tissues. It is particularly important in immunocompromised patients, where serious fungal infections are more common. Cultures may take days to weeks to yield results depending on the organism. Sample type depends on the suspected infection site.
