FSH and LH are produced by the pituitary gland and act on the ovaries in women and testes in men to regulate sex hormone production, ovulation, and sperm production. Their levels and ratio provide critical information about the function of the entire reproductive axis.
This combined test is used to investigate infertility, irregular or absent menstrual periods, polycystic ovary syndrome, premature ovarian failure, suspected menopause, low testosterone in men, and delayed or precocious puberty. The pattern of FSH and LH together — for example, both elevated versus both low — helps distinguish between ovarian or testicular problems versus pituitary or hypothalamic causes.
