Fructosamine forms when glucose binds to serum proteins, primarily albumin. Because albumin has a shorter half-life than red blood cells, fructosamine reflects glucose control over a shorter period than HbA1c — typically the prior 2-3 weeks rather than 2-3 months.
This test is most useful when HbA1c may not accurately reflect glucose control — such as in patients with hemoglobinopathies, hemolytic anemia, recent blood transfusion, pregnancy, or rapid changes in glucose management requiring shorter-term monitoring. Sample type is serum.
