When plasma cells produce excess light chains, the kidneys filter them into urine. Quantitative measurement of urine free light chains (Bence Jones proteins) provides information about the burden of disease and can guide treatment decisions.
This test is used in evaluation of suspected multiple myeloma, monitoring of response to treatment, and assessment of kidney involvement in light chain disorders. A 24-hour urine collection is often preferred for accurate quantification. Sample type is urine.
