FSH stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles in women and supports sperm production in men. Levels vary across the menstrual cycle and rise significantly at menopause. Both abnormally high and abnormally low FSH can indicate reproductive system dysfunction.
This test is used to investigate infertility, irregular or absent menstrual periods, suspected menopause or premature ovarian failure, low testosterone or infertility in men, and disorders of puberty. Patterns of FSH together with LH and sex hormones help distinguish primary gonadal problems from pituitary or hypothalamic causes. Sample type is serum.
