Folate is a B vitamin found in leafy greens, legumes, and fortified grains, and is critical for cell division and growth. Deficiency can cause megaloblastic anemia (large, immature red blood cells), elevated homocysteine, and during pregnancy, neural tube defects in the developing fetus.
This test is used to evaluate macrocytic anemia, screen pregnant women or those planning pregnancy, monitor patients on medications that interfere with folate metabolism (such as methotrexate or certain anticonvulsants), and assess patients with malabsorption or alcohol use. Folate is often tested alongside vitamin B12, since their deficiencies present similarly. Sample type is serum.
