Folate is found in leafy greens, legumes, and fortified grains. It is critical for cell division, especially during pregnancy where deficiency can cause neural tube defects. Adult deficiency may result from poor intake, malabsorption, medications interfering with folate metabolism (such as methotrexate or certain anticonvulsants), and chronic alcohol use.
This test is used to evaluate macrocytic anemia, screen pregnant women or those planning pregnancy, and monitor patients on folate-affecting medications. It is often tested alongside vitamin B12. Sample type is serum.
