Wheat allergy is an IgE-mediated immune reaction to wheat proteins, separate from celiac disease (which is a different immune mechanism). Wheat allergy commonly presents in children, with most outgrowing the allergy by adolescence. Specific IgE testing detects sensitization, though clinical allergy must be confirmed by history or supervised challenge.
This test is used in patients with reactions after wheat ingestion, particularly children with eczema, gastrointestinal symptoms, or anaphylaxis. It does not diagnose celiac disease — that requires separate testing such as tissue transglutaminase antibodies. Sample type is serum.
