ESTRADIOL

Estradiol (E2) is produced mainly by the ovaries in women, with smaller amounts produced by the testes, adrenal glands, and fat tissue. Levels fluctuate dramatically across the menstrual cycle and decline significantly after menopause.

This test is used to investigate irregular menstrual periods, assess fertility and ovarian function, evaluate symptoms of menopause, monitor fertility treatments and hormone therapy, and help diagnose precocious or delayed puberty. In men, it can help evaluate gynecomastia or feminization. Timing of the blood draw within the menstrual cycle is critical for accurate interpretation in premenopausal women. Sample type is serum.
