EPSTEIN-BARR VIRUS (EBV) ANTIBODY PROFILE

EBV produces several characteristic antibodies that appear and disappear at different stages of infection. The profile typically includes VCA IgM (acute infection), VCA IgG (current or past), EA (recent or active), and EBNA (past infection, develops weeks to months after primary infection). The pattern of these antibodies indicates whether infection is acute, recent, or remote.

This profile is used to evaluate suspected infectious mononucleosis, particularly when the heterophile (monospot) test is negative, investigate chronic active EBV, and evaluate EBV-related complications. Sample type is serum.
