Eosinophils are white blood cells involved in allergic reactions and defense against parasites. Elevated counts (eosinophilia) can result from allergies, asthma, parasitic infections, drug reactions, certain skin diseases, autoimmune disorders, and some cancers. Very high counts may indicate hypereosinophilic syndrome, which can cause organ damage.
This test is reported as part of a complete blood count differential and may also be ordered specifically to evaluate persistent eosinophilia. Results help guide further workup, which may include parasite testing, allergy evaluation, or hematologic studies depending on clinical context. Sample type is whole blood in an EDTA tube.
