Early antigen antibodies appear during active EBV infection and typically disappear within several months as infection resolves. Persistent or rising anti-EA IgG can suggest chronic active EBV infection or reactivation in immunocompromised patients.
This test is used in conjunction with other EBV markers to characterize the stage of infection. It is particularly useful in evaluating chronic active EBV, post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease, and certain EBV-associated malignancies. Sample type is serum.
