EBV VCA IgM antibodies appear early in primary EBV infection and typically disappear within a few months. Their presence indicates current or recent infection, making them especially useful in evaluating suspected infectious mononucleosis with a negative heterophile (monospot) test.
This test is used to diagnose acute EBV infection in patients with mononucleosis-like symptoms, particularly in young children where heterophile antibodies often don't develop. It is typically interpreted alongside other EBV antibodies for complete staging of infection. Sample type is serum.
