Digoxin strengthens heart muscle contractions and helps control heart rhythm, but the difference between a therapeutic dose and a toxic one is small. Symptoms of toxicity can include nausea, visual disturbances, confusion, and dangerous arrhythmias, particularly in elderly patients and those with kidney impairment.
This test is ordered to confirm that levels are within the therapeutic range, evaluate suspected toxicity, and adjust dosing when starting therapy, changing other medications, or after changes in kidney function. Blood should typically be drawn at least 6-8 hours after the last dose for accurate interpretation. Sample type is serum.
