DHEA is produced primarily by the adrenal glands and serves as a precursor to other sex hormones, including testosterone and estrogen. It declines naturally with age. Levels can be abnormal in adrenal disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, and adrenal tumors.
This test is used to evaluate women with hirsutism, acne, or irregular periods to look for adrenal contribution to hyperandrogenism; assess adrenal function in suspected insufficiency; and investigate adrenal tumors or congenital adrenal hyperplasia. DHEA-sulfate (DHEA-S) is more commonly used clinically due to its more stable levels. Sample type is serum.
